The female kangaroo hopped over her handlers late on Thursday during a rest stop at the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm in Ontario, the park's supervisor and head keeper, Cameron Preyde, told CBC. Officers on patrol spotted the kangaroo at around 3 a.m. on Monday on a rural property in northern Oshawa, Staff Sergeant Chris Boileau told CBC Toronto. The kangaroo punched one of the officers in the face during the capture, Boileau said. "It's something that he and his platoon mates will be remembering for the rest of their careers," he told CBC Toronto. The kangaroo, which was en route to a zoo in Quebec, received medical treatment and will stay at the Oshawa Zoo for a few days of rest, Preyde said.

The six bedroom, 10,000 square-foot house on Lake Ontario that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a star player with the Oklahoma City Thunder, bought for just over 8.4 million Canadian dollars, or $6.1 million, should have been a dream home. But in May, two days after Mr. Gilgeous-Alexander, 25, moved into the house, near Toronto, with his partner, it became a nightmare, according to a lawsuit seeking to nullify the sale. A menacing visitor appeared looking for a previous occupant. player’s house, described in the real estate listing as an “elegant, resort-like estate,” had been the home of Aiden Pleterski, a self-styled “crypto king” who declared bankruptcy in 2022, while owing just under 13 million Canadian dollars to more than 150 investment clients. Court records show that the home received a steady stream of angry visitors seeking to talk to Mr. Pleterski while he was living there and after he moved out.

The strike has shut down 13 locks between Lake Erie and Montreal, bottling up ships in the Great Lakes and preventing more ships from coming in. It’s the first time that a strike has shut down the vital shipping artery since 1968. Here are 5 of the most obvious examples of how invasive species are impacting all of us right now. Scientists say invasive species are one of the top five drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide (alongside other environmental issues like pollution and climate change). The authors of the new UN report estimate that only about 6% of non-native plants and 11% of non-native microbes are invasive species. "We're recovering from the worst storm I've ever seen, certainly in terms of death from mother nature's wrath," he said. Progress was slow due to the sheer volume and depth of the snow, which Poloncarz said "is not plowable." [1/7] A "let’s go Buffalo" sign is seen behind an abandoned car on the road following a winter storm in Buffalo, New York, U.S., December 27, 2022. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called it an "epic, once-in-a-lifetime" weather disaster, the worst blizzard to hit the Buffalo area in 45 years. Buffalo residents with plows attached to their Jeeps and pickup trucks helped clear side streets.
A cold air mass over Alaska and western Canada was expanding to the south and east Sunday through the holiday week, the National Weather Service said Saturday. Icy "upper-level energy" ahead of the mass has already triggered winter weather advisories for parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, forecasters said. It will eventually impact the northern Rocky Mountains, the Midwest, the Northeast and areas in between, the National Weather Service said. In all, more than 144,000 utility customers from New York state to New England were blacked out by the storm, according to NBC News estimates. As the night deepened Saturday, temperatures dove below freezing even in areas below the Mason-Dixon Line, with even colder weather en route.
Megan Barr and Amanda Johnston snowshoe through Buffalo’s snow-covered streets after an intense lake-effect snowstorm in western and northern New York. Residents of western and northern New York began digging out Sunday from snowfall that was among the most intense on record, even as bad weather continued in other parts of the state. Many cities and towns east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario were buried in as much as 5 feet and in some places 6 feet of snow by two powerful lake-effect storms.
Kathy Hochul announced the activation of the National Guard Saturday to help with clean up in the historic snow storm that battered parts of western New York. About 70 National Guard members were deployed to the badly-impacted southtowns, or the southern portion of Erie County, home to Buffalo, Hochul told NBC News affiliate WGRZ. Hamburg, where the roof of a house collapsed due to the weight of the heavy, wet snow, received over six feet of snow, while southwest Blasdell had over five feet of snow. Buffalo has had about 30 inches of snowfall, according to the National Weather Service. Joshua Bessex / APTwo Erie County men died after suffering “cardiac events" due to shoveling or snow blowing on Friday.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul called in the National Guard, deploying about 70 members to help with snow removal in the hardest-hit parts of Erie County. According to the National Weather Service, conditions could persist through Monday morning. [1/5] Stranded cars are seen on the street during a snowstorm as extreme winter weather hits Buffalo, New York, U.S., November 19, 2022. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said in a tweet that two residents died of apparent heart attacks while shoveling snow. The U.S. National Weather Service forecasts lake-effect snow will dump up to 14 inches in the counties of Chautaqua and Cattaraugus Saturday night through Sunday.
New York residents in Buffalo and other parts of the state are waking up Friday morning to heavy snowfall that officials warn could "paralyze" the hardest hit communities. This has led to an increase in lake effect snow, but that trend is not expected to last. A recent study used a regional climate model to investigate these changes in lake effect snow if our current rate of greenhouse gas emissions continues. By mid-century, the amount of seasonal lake effect snow is projected to increase modestly, as the Great Lakes will remain ice-free longer into the winter. Lake Effect Snow Warnings were in effect early Friday for the Buffalo area and downwind areas of Lake Ontario, the National Weather Service said.
As of Friday morning, Erie County, home to Buffalo, has seen three feet of snow in areas like Orchard Park, 33 inches of snow in Hamburg and about 19.5 inches in southeast Buffalo. The "historic" winter storm is bringing what is known as lake-effect snow, which occurs when arctic air races across the relatively milder waters of the Great Lakes. Kathy Hochul did the same for 11 counties in the western and the northwestern parts of the state near Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Erie County issued a driving ban, including the southern part of Buffalo, according to a tweet from Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. A recent study used a regional climate model to investigate these changes in lake-effect snow if the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions continues.
BUFFALO, N.Y., Nov 17 (Reuters) - Up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) of lake-effect snow could bury parts of Western New York and other states by the end of the weekend, forecasters said on Thursday, paralyzing the city of Buffalo and other areas downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The heaviest totals are likely in Buffalo, the weather service said on its website, stressing it was difficult to predict exactly where the snow bands would develop. "What we are talking about is a major, major storm," New York Governor Kathy Hochul, said on Thursday, a day after she declared a state of emergency in the Buffalo area. By Thursday morning, snow squalls already carpeted parts of New York southeast of Lake Erie with 10 inches of snow. In November 2014, an epic barrage of lake-effect snow deposited more than 5 feet of powder east of Buffalo but dropped just a few inches of snow a few miles to the north, according to the NWS, illustrating the highly localized nature of the phenomenon.
An upstate off-duty New York police officer fatally shot a 27-year-old woman before she turned the gun on herself and took her own life Monday, Rochester police said. Tiffani Gatson, 29, an officer with the Greece Police Department, shot two women at a Rochester home before she died by suicide. Greece is a suburb of Rochester, in western New York on Lake Ontario. Gatson, who had been an officer in Greece since September 2018, was off duty at the time, Greece police said. Gatson was the first African American woman to join the Greece Police Department in 2019, WHEC reported.
